Sitting on the edge of the Oregon coast near Cape Perpetua, Thor’s Well, is a breathtaking natural wonder. A popular destination for photographers and visitors, this large hole carved into the rocky shoreline, with a narrow opening at the top through which the ocean sprays. It’s believed by researchers that it was once a cave that collapsed creating openings at the top and bottom.
During high tide, waves crash into the hole, causing water to shoot up through the opening, creating a spectacular display of water spouting upwards. At low tide, the water drains out of the hole, revealing the rocky landscape beneath. The best time to visit Thor’s Well is one hour before the high tide to see it without water and then observe how the formation fills up.
